The Words from the Cross

The seven recorded words of Jesus from the cross are combined from all four gospels – no single account mentions them all. Their order is not fixed, but this is the traditional sequence. Usually we use them in the setting of three hours of prayer in church from 12-3pm on Good Friday.

This year, we cannot gather and so I offer these short ‘meditation prompts’ to anyone who will find them helpful. They are intended to be used with a time in between each for personal prayer and reflection – of course, with them available here you can use them however will most help you.

The first word – ‘Father, forgive them’ (Luke 23:34)
The second word – ‘Today you will be with me in paradise’ (Luke 23:43)
The third word – ‘Woman, here is your son.’ (John 19:26-27)
The fourth word – ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ (Mark 15:34)
The fifth word – ‘I am thirsty’ (John 19:28)
The sixth word – ‘It is finished’ (John 19:30)
The final word – ‘Father, into your hands I commend my spirit’ (Luke 23:46)
